Back Pain and Breastfeeding
The last two words you want to hear when breastfeeding are: back pain
However, back pain is among the most common complaints among new mothers, regardless of whether they are breastfeeding or not. Simply adjusting to carrying the child, bending over to pick it up, and the lack of sleep associated with nursing is putting a strain on the back. This makes it all the more important that new mothers pay attention to proper body mechanics and breastfeeding techniques.
Preventing back pain while nursing
As an office of chiropractor, we want to establish good body mechanics as the norm so that the burden of your newborn doesn’t cause your back any pain. Here are some tips for preventing back pain while nursing:
- Baby to breast, rather than the other way around.
- When possible, use pillows as props to share the weight of the child as you breastfeed.
- On the move, use a baby wrap to hold the child in position and share the weight with your spine.
- Build up your core with stretching and gentle exercising.
- Minimize stress
